What Areas Do You Cover?
Every second week the Pennywise produces 4 separate paper editions, delivered by Canada Post in the West Kootenay, as listed below. As well as several Newsstand Drops as noted on the distribution map. (see the Distribution Area Map).
Complete coverage of Trail, Rossland, Fruitvale, Montrose.
Complete coverage of the City of Nelson, Blewett, Taghum, Ymir & Salmo.
- Kootenay Lake:
Total coverage from the Nelson bridge to Kaslo and the area north. Plus East Shore; Kootenay Bay to Creston.
Total coverage of the City of Castlegar, Genelle, South Slocan, Crescent Valley, Thrums, Slocan Park, Winlaw and Slocan.
When Does the Pennywise Come Out?
Mail distribution begins on Monday, although some areas may get the delivery as late as Thursday. Email subscriptions to the Pennywise are delivered each Monday, times may vary.
Deadline for Ad Submissions
For all ads, the production week deadline is Wednesday at 3pm. If you miss the deadline, you can still submit the ad and know that it will be saved and placed in the edition published in the week to follow. *For an early proof Display Ad, the deadline is Tuesday at 3pm for publication the following week.
What is a Liveload?
If you missed the deadline for the next paper, consider using our Liveload service to get your ad up and on the website, ASAP. *Note: Immediate payment must be made via Credit Card or eTransfer.
What are the Pennywise Office Hours?

We can do just about anything! Adding an asterisk * in front will boost your ad above the others. Multiple asterisks boosts above all. Make your ad stand out by putting a Box around it. Or you can add some colour to the lead-in, or within the text. We can even add emojis, or super-size the text. Just ask, and we’ll do our best.
Classified Ads vs Display Ads
Classified ads are commonly short descriptions of the subject you are advertising, whether it is a job opportunity, a garage sale, used or new merchandise, an event, etc. Sometimes a Classified ad in the printed paper will include a single picture. Display ads are often larger in size and make use of graphics, different fonts and pictures, ideal for businesses, sales and events and important notices.
Business vs Personal & Non-Profit
When submitting a Classified Ad you are often given the choice between Business or Personal/Non-Profit rates. If your ad is specific to selling or advertising for a commercial business you must select Business rates. Likewise, if you are advertising a Rental you must select Business rates. If you are placing an ad as an individual or on behalf of a not-for-profit organization you can take advantage of the Pennywise’s Personal & Non-Profit rates.
Submitting Display Ads

If you prefer to make use of our multi-award-winning graphics and marketing team to create the ad for you, please contact the sales rep who covers your area. Free for Free
If you are giving away something for free, the ad is free to place! However the duration of the ad is limited to just one week, in all areas. If you want to run the ad again for another week, just resubmit your ad to our team.
Lost & Found Ads
If you have found an item that you believe someone lost, the ad is free to place! However, like our free for free deal, the duration of the ad is limited to just one week, in all areas. If you want to run the ad again for another week, just resubmit your ad to our team. If you have lost an item, it is considered a regular Classified Ad at Personal rates.
Cost to Place a Classified Ad
We put out 4 separate papers each week to 4 areas (see the Area Map). The single-area or base costs are listed below. For wider circulation, you can choose to place your ad in 2, or 3, or all 4 area editions for total West Kootenay coverage. For 2 area publication, multiply the base cost below by 2; for 3 area publication, multiply the base cost by 3. You get the idea!
*Personal Rates = First 12 words, 1 area, for 1 print run, $3.50
*Business Rates = First 12 words, 1 area, for 1 print run, $5.00
Then, for each additional word…
Personal Rates = 20¢ a word per area, per print run.
Business Rates = 40¢ a word per area, per print run.

We accept Visa and Mastercard Credit Cards, eTransfer, and cheque. For new customers we require payment before we will run the ad.

You can pay by cheque or cash at our head office in Kaslo (400 A Avenue) or to the Kootenay Currency Exchange at 715 Vernon Street, in Nelson BC. Here is a link to their page on Facebook.
Certain categories are mandatory for business rates. They are as follows: Anything Commercial, Legal, Firewood, Rentals, Automotive Services, Animal Care, Health/Personal, Contractors/Trades, Gardening/Landscaping, Services, Real Estate Agents, & Employment Opportunities.
Is There Still a Pre-Pay Discount?
Sorry, we no longer offer this option.
Payment Grace Period
Personal ads payment due upon placement of ad. New Businesses need pay upon receipt of invoice until a credit history is established, at which point 30 days becomes acceptable. Having issues making a payment? Talk to us… we are people too 🙂
When is Delivery?

Can You Mail Directly to My Home?
Canada Post considers the Pennywise a flyer. As long as you have requested flyers NOT be delivered to your home (or business) address, you will receive the Pennywise in your mail.
Can You Email the Paper To Me?
Yes! Simply sign up for the edition you want by providing your name and email, and each week we will deliver you the newest e-Edition to your email. Find past editions, and the sign-up form here: Email Digital Editions.
How do I submit an Obituary?
We understand this is very sensitive and we want to make it as easy as possible to submit an obituary. We encourage you to use our submission form, found here: www.pennywiseads.com/submit-obituary-form/ or call us and talk with Karma, 1-800-663-4619, or email her, firstname.lastname@example.org.
Can You Special Deliver Copies To Me?
Yes we can! Even if you are out of province, we will do our best to accommodate you. Please contact us by phone or email for any special requests.
We publish the Kaslo Guide each year, and the Go Kootenay’s Magazine 2x per year. We do reach thousands of people across the Kootenay’s with these publications, in order to advertise with our services, please see our Advertisement page.
