The two teams that make up the West Kootenay Women' s Roller Derby League (WKRDL) will hit the track for the first time at the Rossland Arena on Sunday, September 12 at 7 pm (doors open at 6 pm).
Rossland' s Gnarlies Angels and Salmo' s Babes of Brutality have been practising their hits, blocks and skating in preparation for ÒMountain Mayhem,Ó sponsored by Mountain FM. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door; kids 10 and under are free. Derby Rash (a spiked juice), beer and snacks will be available. Fan merchandise will also be on sale and there will be a surprise half-time show requiring audience participation. After the exciting two-hour bout wraps up, an after-party will be held at the Steamshovel in Rossland.
Roller derby is an American-invented sport that' s based on formation roller-skating around an oval track, with points scored as two players from opposite teams called ÒjammersÓ, lap members of the opposing teams. A jammer from each team starts seconds later and several metres behind a pack, made up of most players from both teams. When the whistle is blown, the jammers fight their way through the pack with help from their teammates who act defensively and offensively in the pack - hitting and blocking the other team. Once a jammer makes it through the pack, she can score points by lapping the pack again - with one point scored per opposition player passed in each lap.
Tickets for this exciting event can be picked up in advance at RossVegas in Rossland, Gerick Cycle and Sports in Trail, Black Russian Skate Apparel in Castlegar, Skyway Hardware in Salmo, The Goods in Ymir and Phat Angel in Nelson.
