Have you thought about music? Not listening to it: PLAYING it. Yourself – your fingers, your brains, your breath. With friends. Yes, you.
The Trail & District After School Band invites wanna-be musicians to start at the very beginning and learn an instrument. As the name implies, it takes place at 3:30 in the afternoon so it suits the after-school crowd, but adults are also welcome. Haven’t you thought about it? Now’s the time.
The TDASB began in the basement of the Trail Alliance Church, but has now moved to the more central location of Selkirk College in Downtown Trail. The program receives grant funding from CBT, Teck, RDKB and the Trail Arts Council, and has a close relationship to the Maple Leaf Band. Because of these and other community partnerships, a full September-June season of learning with the TDASB costs only $150 – where else can you find music lessons for such a bargain? Even your chosen wind instrument is available on loan (refundable deposit required).
So, here’s a thought: bring a young person and learn together. Did you maybe play long ago in high school and want to dig out that instrument again and see if it still squawks? Take a deep breath and unbury the dusty case from the back of the closet, and bring a child with you for moral support. Grandparents/parents and kids who play music together share a special connection and help motivate each other to learn. Plus it builds great brain skills – just ask a math teacher.
The twin legacies of the pandemic and the telecom breakdown have challenged our reliance outside our own resources for entertainment and connection. Music is an antidote for boredom and a prescription for creative connectivity, plus it builds great brain skills. Music prepares us to be resilient in an uncertain world. There’s no time like now to give it a try.
