We are excited to be starting the renovation of the community kitchen in the lower hall of the Nelson United Church. Because the kitchen and environs will be unusable, our Good Food Bank will be offered out of the Nelson Covenant Church for two to three months, starting March 1.

The Covenant Church team has been kind enough to offer us the use of their basement and the Good Food Bank will be open Tuesdays 12-2 pm and Wednesdays, 1-4 pm. We have communicated this to our program participants and we are hoping for a smooth transition for the time that we are there.

Why the move?

Phase 3 of our renovation of the lower hall is finally upon us. We are renovating the kitchen and bringing it up to commercial standards and code. This is great news for Nelson Community Food Centre program participants, staff and volunteers. It will also benefit the many other community groups and the Nelson United Church who use the kitchen Friday through Sunday.

Where to?

Our Good Food Bank’s temporary home is just two blocks away from our current location. The program will be run out of the Nelson Covenant Church, 702 Stanley Street, which is just up the hill from Nelson Public Library and the Police Station, on the same side of the street.  The folks from the Nelson Covenant Church have been kind enough to let us use their lower hall for the duration of our renovation (likely March – May). As with our current relationship with the Nelson United Church, we will be sharing the Covenant Church space but we have no religious connection. Please enter through the door at the corner of the Silica/Stanley.

How do I get there?

If you are a Good Food Bank participant, we encourage you to walk, bike or take public transit if at all possible (the #1 Uphill bus stop is right out front, here’s the schedule).  It’s a couple blocks above Baker Street and very close to downtown. If you need to drive, be aware that parking near the Covenant Church is limited – but there are some 2-hour spots that may be open.

Will things be different?

We will be striving to run our Good Food Bank program in the same way as we do in our permanent location. The Covenant Church is a new location for us with different facilities, so there may be some hiccups. We appreciate your understanding and patience with our team as we do our best in providing healthy food, once a week, to people facing adversity.
