Brilliant Bridge is a suspension bridge built by the Doukhobor community in 1913 to span the Kootenay River. It is now part of Castlegar’s trail network and a regional park.
Waterloo Eddy Regional Park is just south of Castlegar and surrounds a protected bay on the river. Bring the inflatables and the swimsuits.
Trail
Jubilee Park along the Esplanade, immediately behind the Trail Riverfront Centre at 1505 Bay Avenue (downtown). Benches and green spaces for picnics or enjoy the river walk.
Rotary Park just past the Columbia River Skywalk on Riverside Avenue (downtown). Benches, picnic tables and a covered gazebo overlook the Columbia River and Trail’s three bridges.
Gyro Park Take Second Avenue (your first left after the Victoria Street Bridge in East Trail), where you’ll find ample green space, benches, picnic tables, the Trail Sk8 Park and the beach. Washrooms are also available here.

TAGHUM BEACH 8.4 km west of Nelson. Take Hwy 3A and turn left on Granite Road, just before the bridge over the Kootenay River.
Slocan
Expo Park in the Village of Slocan is at the first 4-way stop when you enter town off the highway,
Slocan Rail Trail Anywhere that you can gain access to the trail you’re sure to find a nice picnic spot along the edge.
Winlaw Regional & Nature Park Follow Cedar Creek Road, cross the bridge over the Slocan River and turn right. It is a delightful riverside green space, with nature walks, picnic tables, benches and bathrooms.
Nakusp
BROADWAY AVE, on the grassy knoll, above the public beach, couple blocks walk from the museum and visitor centre.
WATERFRONT PROMENADE, below Broadway Avenue has picnic tables at either end and just below Save On Foods.
NAKUSP HOT SPRINGS Even though the hot springs are closed until further notice, the hiking/biking trails are open; there is a beautiful wooden covered bridge that is just five minutes’ walk from the parking area of the hot springs building, and it has picnic tables in it.
IONE FALLS There is a picnic area at Ione Falls about 16 kms from Nakusp on Hwy 23.
SUMMIT LAKE Towards Nelson, at Summit Lake, is a day area in the provincial park with picnic tables.
