Did you know the Shawn Lamb Archives at Touchstones Nelson hold over 17,000 obituary records of local people who died from 1888 up to 2020? To view of the list of each of these individuals please check out the new Touchstones Nelson website Archival Resources page. You will also find a new list of all our 5,000 plus City of Nelson plumbing permits which can reveal important details about the historic buildings and homes that frequent “the Queen City”. We also have an updated reference articles list which features reports, memoirs and articles written about aspects of our local history.
Touchstones has recently started two new Archival projects to make our collections more accessible. We are the main repository of the local Shaw TV archive. This archive includes over 600 Umatic and VHS tapes, mainly from 1980s and 1990s. The tapes feature many of the events that took place in and around Nelson such as festivals, sporting events and theatre and music performances – you may even recognize many of the people in them! We have now started to document and digitize these important films. We plan to have some films available soon on our Touchstones Nelson YouTube channel.
2021 Touchstones Archives Calendar is available at the Museum shop. Made with images found in the Shawn Lamb Archives – some favourites, and maybe a few you haven’t seen before!
We are also starting scanning many of the D.Dan Morslander photo images which were donated to the Archives in 2018. We hope to have a selection of these photos online on our popular Touchstones Nelson Flickr photos website soon. D.Dan was a mural artist who created artworks on display at the Hume Hotel, Selkirk College and on Vernon Street. He was also an avid photographer who took thousands of undocumented photographs of the many people he was associated with. Please contact us if you think you could help us put a name to a face.
