The Nelson Police Department is advising of a bear sighting in the 600 block of West Gore Street at about 6 pm on March 27. The bear was located in front of a private residence, possibly trying to access a covered porch area. The bear was scared off by the homeowner and was last seen walking into a nearby wooded area. Nelson Police attended the scene but were unable to locate the bear. The bear was described to Police as a large adult black or brown bear.

Nelson residents are reminded to be vigilant of their surroundings and contact Police and BC Conservation of any similar sightings. Residents across the city are further reminded that we are now entering the bear season where adherence to the City of Nelson’s Waste Management and Wildlife Attractant Bylaw will greatly reduce these types of encounters with bears and other wildlife.

BC Conservation Service has been notified.
